Consider for a moment the latest look of the 2011 Infiniti QX56.  There was nothing exciting about the previous QX56.  Its a good thing that the QX56 took some style from its kid brother; the FX35.  Looking head on at the QX56, you can really see the sculptured lines.  Upgrade to the Deluxe Touring package and you can have 22-inch rims and tires among other things.

Power has been increased over 25% over the earlier generations 320 horsepower, and now stands at 400.  The motor is an 8-cylinder beast capable of putting down over 400 torque, which is plenty enough to tow 8k lbs.  The engine of the 2011 Infiniti QX56 is much more sophisticated and uses direct injection which shoots gas right into the cylinder itself.  To help enhance the fuel economy the QX56 employs a 7 speed tranny .  The QX56 also gets much better miles per gallon compared to the last generation  .  The 2011 Infiniti QX56 should see over 13 MPG in the city and 20 MPG on the highway.  .  The only model that comes close to these figures is the Escalade hybrid which cost much more.  The fuel tank can hold 28 gallons of gas and the full sized sport utility vehicle can go up to 253 miles between fill-ups.

You can either get a QX56 with either a 7 or 8 passenger design.  .  Captains chairs can be opted for instead of a second row bench seat.  There is also a center console in the rear.  There are a couple of nice creature comforts in the rear such as multiple air vents and televisions, as well as plenty of room.  Huge seven inch TV are set in the back of the headrests.  The interior is covered in ultra luxurious leather.  According to Infiniti, the latest QX56 will be lighter than the earlier version.

This sport utility vehicle contains some really trick components.  One innovative and new to Infiniti advancement is the Hydraulic Body Motion Control System.  This system will limit the amount of body roll by up to 40% when the large SUV is cornering.  How this works is the Hydraulic System mentioned previously fills the outside shocks with extra fluid to keep them more rigid .  The Hydraulic Body Control System is so advanced it keeps the QX56 more steady than BMW.

There are some really advanced safety components present  on this SUV.   All wheel drive coupled with traction control is an essential safety component.  The traction control system can split the torque between the wheels in order to send more power to the wheels that need it.  The collection of safety gadgets all work together to keep the passengers safe.  Infiniti has something called an advanced air bag system which has front air bags, side curtain air bags, and roof mounted air bags for roll overs.  Another active safety feature on the latest QX56 is the Intelligent Brake Assist which can slow or even stop the sport utility vehicle if an accident is upcoming.  Pretty much all luxury vehicles today are equipped with some sort of lane departure warning system and the QX56 is one of these automobiles.  The cruise control system is also a smart system that will keep the same amount of distance between you and the model in front even if the slow down a bit.   The QX56 also has a system in place to alert the driver if there is an automobile in the SUV’s blind spot.  The QX56 is a value at a little over $55,000 in the luxury sport utility vehicle segment. The 2011 Infiniti M37 and M56 will be the first to be sold across all of Infiniti’s 32 markets around the world, including Western Europe, and are scheduled to arrive at dealerships spring 2010.

The IIHS test are not limited to crash test only.  They also take into account a couple of other safety criteria that must be met.  One of these is that each vehicle must have Electronic Stability Control.   Cars equipped with ESC significantly reduce the risk of a crash.  On an SUV; a feature like Vehicle Dynamic Control (what ESC is called on the EX35), can reduce the risk of a fatal single vehicle crash by 50% and a roll-over by 80% according to  IIHS.

The Essence was designed with dramatic design, technology and performance and ultimately becoming a 600 HP petro-V-electric hybrid coupe with rear wheel drive and seating for two.  It was displayed at Goodwood’s FoS-TECH pavilion and just recently at the fun filled Goodwood Hillclimb Festival, where it was shown and driven in public for the first time.  Joining the other vehicles at the festival was particularly momentous for the engineers who will share in driving the new Infiniti.

The vehicle is built around a front engine RWD chassis and stretches 4.7m in length.  Although the Essence is the most striking car seen from the Infiniti brand yet, the drive train is where the concept really shines. It features a direct injection twin-turbocharged 3.7Liter V-6 engine that collaborates with a new electric motor called the 3D Motor and produces  592 horsepower. The electric motor was designed to meet tough requirements on size and power output and can run independently as well as parallel to the gas engine, which is unique to the hybrid system. The result of this new electric motor is a slim, disc shaped motor that has twice the torque of a conventional unit. The design of the electric 3D motor alone was achieved by 3D magnetic field analysis used to optimize the layout of the electro-magnetic coils and permanent magnets.  This motor is located between the engine and the transmission and draws its power from a compact lithium ion battery pack in the boot area. Optimized energy usage across a large range of driving conditions is guaranteed by two separate clutches. The clutches rotate the motors as required and provide a system that needs no torque converter.

As a result of this new technology, the Essence is extremely responsive in performance and emits no emissions at low speeds. While we’re more than a little disappointed that the Essence will never hit production, if the concept’s handsome design makes its way into other Infiniti vehicles;  it’d be a good start.
